Delicious and Easy Slow Cooker Flank Steak

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This easy slow cooker flank steak is tender and delicious.  This simple recipe should have you running for the cupboard to retrieve your lonely and dusty crock pot and creating a tasty steak meal for your family. Hey, make life a little easier for yourself.  You just know you are not using that crock pot to its max.

There was a time when I didn’t let steak touch the inside of my crock pot.  Steak was usually cooked on the grill or in the oven, maybe pan fried on occasion.  However, when you start to dabble in the less expensive cuts of meat, you better be prepared to slave over the stove or electric frying pan for a light prison term.  Because, as we all know, cheaper cuts of meat are less tender and require that oh so long cooking time.  That is where the slow cooker enters center stage and becomes the star.

When I was young, I don’t think my Mom ever used a crock pot. She didn’t work outside the home. So I guess she wasn’t that crunched for time.  I really didn’t know all that much about slow cookers until I got married and tried to work all day and come home and prepare a meal that would evoke compliments from my new husband.  That turned out to be harder than I thought. I learned very fast that I needed to save time.  I had received a slow cooker as a wedding gift so I decided to give it a whirl.

At first, cooking with the slow cooker seemed more trouble than it was worth.  But I kept on trying and within a short time I was all aboard for the crock pot love train. I have been chugging along with my crock pot ever since.

Course: Dinner
Cuisine: international
Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs flank steak
  • 1/4 cup sauterne wine or any sweet wine that you find drinkable
  • 1 tbs soy sauce
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 14.5 oz can of beef broth or consomme
  • 1 tsp sauce seasoning such as Kitchen Bouquet®
  • 1 tbls ketchup
  • 1 tsp prepared mustard
  • 8 fresh mushrooms, washed and halved
  • 2 tbs cornstarch
  • 2 tbs water

Instructions

  • Place steak in bottom of slow cooker. (Often times I will brown
the meat prior to lining it in the bottom of the crock pot, but there
is no hard fast rule that says you must do this).
  • Combine wine, soy sauce, garlic, beef broth, sauce seasoning, ketchup and mustard. Pour over the steak. Add the mushrooms. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. I find that the shorter cooking time is usually the norm due to the thinner cuts of flank steak you usually find in the markets now a days.
  • When meat is cooked, dissolve cornstarch in water. Stir cornstarch into crock pot, cover and cook another 10 minutes or until sauce has thickened to your liking. Pair this tasty steak with mashed potatoes and a green salad with ranch dressing.
