Combine all ingredients until dry ingredients are moistened.
Drop by tablespoons into oil at 350° and cook until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel and serve immediately.
Variations: I don't know if it is because I am Italian, or what, but often times I will add a 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese to the mix and a tablespoon of chopped parsley. It certainly isn't traditional, but hey, I'm Italian, Parmesan cheese and parsley are a tradition to me! I think the hush puppies taste great both ways.Believe it or not, hush puppies are great dipped in ranch or blue cheese dressing.
